Why do I specialize exclusively in reflections?
|
Often I am asked: why your fascination with reflections? On ‘reflection’, I think it must be the unexpected joy of seeing the world in a different way, a way that could be called almost magical... the play of light on water and the way it diffuses colours, creating a mélange of subtle nuances and strange shapes... the way images reflected in glass or metal become distorted, in a cubist or surreal way, playing with pattern and line... the way reflections of light on polished surfaces give rein to a myriad of abstract compositions.. It is the sudden glimpse of a striking "painting" full of colour, shape, movement and light... it is the excitement of seeing and capturing the fleeting image, one that can never be repeated and that will never be changed from the original... it is the realization that there is unexpected beauty all around us that can be seen... if only we would look... |
An amazing gift to my portfolio of reflections was the advent of direct printing on brushed aluminium dibond, executed in specialized laboratories. I quickly discovered that this process was perfect for my work: everything that is white in the original photograph becomes shimmering silver, and the entire image is given a texture and luminosity that make it come alive and become almost ethereal. It is a marvellous marriage of art and technology. An observation made by someone upon seeing my work for the first time: "What is absolutely fascinating is that what the viewer sees in your images of reflections reflects much about the viewer himself..." -- reflection upon reflections..? |
I would like to end by paying a tribute to my very talented and artistic mother, Dorothy Phillips,
who immersed me at a very early age in the stimulating and exciting world of art and artists....
and who introduced me to the beauty of the world...
